ASSESSMENT OF DISTAL RADIAL BONE MINERAL DENSITY AND BONE AGE USING THE BONECHECK MODEL IN POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROTIC PATIENTS WITH LUMBAR SPINE OSTEOARTHRITIS

Abstract

Objectives: To assess distal radius bone mineral density (BMD), BONEcheck bone age, anthropometric features, and fracture risk in postmenopausal osteoporotic women with lumbar spine degeneration.


Subjects and methods: Cross‑sectional study of 87 postmenopausal women ≥50 years with osteoporosis and lumbar spondylosis. BMD was measured by DXA at distal radius, lumbar spine, and proximal femur; bone age and 5‑year untreated fracture risk were calculated by BONEcheck.


Results: BMD (g/cm²): 1/3 radius 0,448 ± 0,070; mid‑distal radius 0,367 ± 0,065; ultra‑distal radius 0,286 (IQR 0,256-0,310); total radius 0,366 ± 0,053, all significantly lower than lumbar spine (L1-L4) 0,667 (IQR 0,594-0,749) (Friedman, p<0,05). Chronological age, bone age and 5‑year untreated fracture risk correlated negatively with 1/3 radius BMD (r = -0.451, -0.460, -0.360).


Conclusion: Distal radius BMD, bone age and BONEcheck‑derived fracture risk are useful for diagnosis and fracture‑risk stratification in these patients.
