CHARACTERISTICS, CLINICAL FEATURES, AND TREATMENT OF ACUTE DIARRHEA CAUSED BY ROTAVIRUS IN CHILDREN UNDER 5 YEARS OLD AT HAI DUONG PEDIATRIC HOSPITAL IN 2024

Abstract
Objective: Description of epidemiological, clinical, and treatment characteristics of acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus in children under 5 years old at Hai Duong Pediatric Hospital in 2024.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling, with a total of 267 patients enrolled.
Results: Male children accounted for the majority (65.92%). The male to female ratio was 1.9:1. Most children exhibited symptoms of watery diarrhea (93.63%), followed by vomiting (75.28%), anorexia and refusal to feed (61.79%), abdominal pain (43.07%), fever (34.45%), and weight loss (12.73%). Forty-six point eighty-two percent of children showed no signs of dehydration, 49.06% had mild or moderate dehydration, and only 4.12% showed signs of severe dehydration. Oral rehydration therapy (97.75%) and zinc supplementation (97%) are the main measures in the treatment of acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus. Currently, no antiviral drugs are used to treat rotavirus infection, so administering the RVA vaccine is recommended.
Conclusion: Acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus is very common in children under 5 years old. Clinical manifestations include a high rate of watery diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration. Rehydration through oral means and zinc supplementation are the primary treatments for acute diarrhea caused by Rotavirus. Children should receive the Rotavirus vaccine at the appropriate time.
