Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics and correlations among erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and several related factors in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia indicated for surgery.

Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 141 patients with confirmed benign prostatic hyperplasia indicated for surgical intervention, treated at the Department of Urology, Hanoi Medical University Hospital from January 2020 to December 2022.

Results: Erectile dysfunction was observed in 74.5% of patients, predominantly mild (44.7%) and moderate (29.8%). All patients had ejaculatory dysfunction, with the majority being moderate (40.4%) and severe (59.6%). Most patients presented with moderate (46.8%) to severe (48.9%) lower urinary tract symptoms. Erectile dysfunction was associated with age and frequency of sexual intercourse. Ejaculatory dysfunction was associated with serum PSA levels and frequency of sexual intercourse. Lower urinary tract symptoms were associated with serum PSA levels and prostate volume.

Conclusion: Most patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia indicated for surgery had erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and LUTS. Factors that may be associated include age, PSA levels, prostate volume, and frequency of sexual activity.
