Abstract

Objective: To identify factors affecting the prevention of surgical site infection prevention guidelines in surgical departments at Nam Dinh General Hospital.

Methods: A descriptive qualitative study was conducted using semi-structured interviews with nurses who were directly involved in the care of surgical patients in surgical departments. Participants were selected through purposive sampling. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using content analysis to identify key themes related to adherence to surgical site infection prevention guidelines.

Results: The findings indicated that nurses’ adherence to surgical site infection prevention was influenced by multiple factors. Major barriers included heavy workload, shortage of nursing staff, and limitations in facilities and medical supplies. In addition, nurses’ awareness of infection prevention, training programs on infection control, leadership support, and effective teamwork within the healthcare team were identified as important facilitators promoting adherence.

Conclusion: Nurses’ adherence to surgical site infection prevention is influenced by factors related to individual nurses, working conditions, and the organizational environment. Identifying these factors provides an important basis for developing strategies to improve infection prevention practices and enhance the quality of surgical patient care.
