Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics, treatment outcomes of hospitalized patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and to analyze the association between blood eosinophil count (BEC) and treatment outcomes.


Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 79 patients.


Results: The majority were elderly males (≥60 years: 65.8%) with a history of smoking (97.5%). Most patients presented with typical symptoms and were classified into severe groups (GOLD C and D: 94.9%). The proportion of patients with BEC ≥300 cells/µL was 60.8%. Most patients received combination antibiotic therapy with cephalosporins. The mean length of hospital stay was 9 days, and the readmission rate was 63.3%. Patients with BEC ≥300 cells/µL had a higher risk of readmission but a shorter length of hospital stay (p < 0.001).


Conclusion: Hospitalized COPD patients were predominantly elderly males with severe clinical characteristics. Elevated BEC was common and was associated with treatment outcomes, particularly an increased risk of readmission.
