INVESTIGATION OF ALTERATIONS IN COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT PARAMETERS AMONG PATIENTS WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract

Objective: To investigate alterations in hematological parameters in patients with schizophrenia compared with healthy controls.


Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional case–control study was conducted on 66 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and 45 healthy individuals as controls. All participants underwent peripheral blood count testing. Red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet indices were collected and analyzed. Data were processed using SPSS version 31. Quantitative variables were presented as mean ± standard deviation. Comparisons between the two groups were performed using the independent samples t-test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.


Results: Compared with the control group, patients with schizophrenia showed significantly higher white blood cell count (8.26±1.76 vs. 7.12±1.44, p < 0.01), neutrophil count (5.06±1.53 vs. 4.33±1.12, p < 0.01), and monocyte count (0.66±0.21 vs. 0.50±0.15, p < 0.01). In contrast, red blood cell count (4.56±0.67 vs. 4.93±0.57, p < 0.01), hemoglobin (133.67±16.69 vs. 143.22±15.79, p < 0.01), and hematocrit (0.40±0.05 vs. 0.43±0.04, p < 0.01) were significantly lower in the patient group.


Conclusion: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit significant alterations in several hematological parameters compared to healthy individuals, including increased white blood cell, neutrophil, and monocyte counts, as well as decreased red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit. These changes suggest an association with low-grade chronic inflammation in patients.
