Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the morphological characteristics of distal radius width and thickness in Vietnamese adults using computed tomography (CT), and to analyze the associations between these morphometric parameters and basic anthropometric characteristics.

Subjects and methods: A prospective descriptive study was conducted on 166 wrists from 83 Vietnamese adult volunteers (37 males and 46 females) aged 20-59 years. Wrist CT images were acquired and reconstructed in three dimensions, and morphometric measurements were performed using SolidWorks software. The parameters evaluated included distal radius width (DRW) and distal radius thickness (DRT). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 29. Differences between sexes were assessed using the Mann-Whitney U test, and correlations between variables were evaluated using Spearman’s correlation coefficient.

Results and Conclusion: The median age of the study population was 41 years (20-59). Males had higher median height and body weight compared with females. Distal radius dimensions were significantly larger in males than in females. The overall median DRW was 30.20 mm (26.37-39.50), and the median DRT was 21.91 mm (18.00-29.34). Both parameters were significantly greater in males than in females. Correlation analysis demonstrated strong positive correlations between DRW and DRT with height and body weight, whereas BMI showed only weak positive correlations with these parameters. Distal radius width and thickness in Vietnamese adults exhibit clear sex-related differences and are significantly associated with anthropometric characteristics, particularly height and body weight. These morphometric data may provide useful references for surgical planning and for selecting appropriate plate and screw sizes in the treatment of distal radius fractures.
