Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study is to assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture in conjunction with ultrasound therapy and exercise therapy as a supportive treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee.


Subjects and methods: From June 2025 to March 2026, patients at Nam Dinh Traditional Medicine Hospital with osteoarthritis of the knee participated in a longitudinal study. The VAS score, Lequesne index, range of motion (ROM), and WOMAC index were used to assess the patients' outcomes at three different time points: before therapy (T0), after seven days (T7), and after fourteen days (T14).


Results: The selection criteria were met by 68 patients. Most of them (70.6% and 20.6%) had fair and good outcomes. The mean VAS score decreased from 6.85±1.02 to 1.85±0.64. From extremely severe (11.45±2.34) to moderate (5.12±1.45), the Lequesne index showed improvement. The knee joint's flexion and extension angles both increased (from 172.5±3.1 degrees to 178.2±1.5 degrees and from 92.4±7.8 degrees to 118.5±5.2 degrees). The overall WOMAC score declined dramatically from 61.19±9.56 to 21.61±4.18. With p < 0.05, every improvement was statistically significant.


Conclusion: For patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, the combination of electroacupuncture, ultrasound therapy, and exercise therapy has shown excellent efficacy in lowering pain, enhancing range of motion, and regaining functional activities.
