INVESTIGATION OF FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DELIRIUM TREMENS IN PATIENTS WITH ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the association between specific clinical factors and the risk of developing delirium tremens (DTs) in patients during the alcohol withdrawal state.


Methods: A retrospective case-control study and case-by-case analysis were conducted on 73 patients in alcohol withdrawal states. The subjects were divided into two groups: Group 1 consisted of 34 patients diagnosed with alcohol withdrawal state with delirium (F10.4), and Group 2 consisted of 39 patients diagnosed with alcohol withdrawal state (F10.3), according to ICD-10 criteria.


Results: The duration of alcohol dependence, the amount of alcohol consumed, and the duration of abstinence were significantly higher in the group with delirium compared to the group without delirium. A history of delirium tremens and generalized seizures were identified as key risk factors promoting delirium tremens, with Odds Ratios of 6.91 (95% CI: 2.00-23.78) and 8.10 (95% CI: 2.81-23.35), respectively.


Conclusion: Prolonged alcohol dependence, heavy alcohol consumption, a longer duration of abstinence, a history of delirium tremens, and generalized seizures are significant factors associated with the promotion of delirium tremens in patients during the alcohol withdrawal state
