CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS, PARACLINICAL FINDINGS, AND BRONCHOSCOPIC FEATURES IN PATIENTS WITH LUNG CANCER AT BAC NINH ONCOLOGY HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics, paraclinical findings, and bronchoscopic features of lung cancer patients at Bac Ninh Oncology Hospital.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 216 patients with histopathologically confirmed lung cancer who underwent flexible bronchoscopy from March 2025 to March 2026.
Results: The mean age of the patients was 66.88 ± 7.85 years, and males accounted for 80.6% of the study population. Chest pain was the most common presenting symptom (77.8%), followed by productive cough (45.4%) and dyspnea (35.2%). The duration of symptoms was less than one month in 82.9% of patients. Chest computed tomography revealed a solitary pulmonary lesion in 72.7% of cases, right lung involvement in 43.1%, and tumor size <5 cm in 64.8%. Bronchoscopic examination showed reduced signal intensity in 50.5% of patients; grade 1 bronchial stenosis accounted for 51.9%, while grade 4 stenosis accounted for 32.9%. Exophytic tumors were the most common bronchoscopic finding in the right bronchial tree (26.9%), whereas infiltrative lesions predominated in the left bronchial tree (21.8%). Adenocarcinoma was the most frequent histopathological subtype (41.2%), followed by neuroendocrine tumors (19.0%) and squamous cell carcinoma (13.9%). T3 tumors accounted for the highest proportion (39.8%), and N2 lymph node involvement was observed in 48.1% of patients. The diagnostic success rate of flexible bronchoscopy was 95.4%. Procedure-related complications were uncommon, with bleeding occurring in 4.2% and hypoxemia in 1.4% of patients.
Conclusions: Lung cancer predominantly affected elderly male patients. Chest pain was the most common presenting symptom. Flexible bronchoscopy demonstrated a high diagnostic yield (95.4%) with a low complication rate.
