PREVALENCE OF ANEMIA AND SELECTED ASSOCIATED FACTORSIN PRETERM NEONATES AT BINH THUAN GENERAL HOSPITAL DURING 2025–2026

Abstract

Background: Anemia in preterm neonates is an important clinical condition because it may affect mortality and long-term outcomes.


Objective: To determine the prevalence of anemia and investigate some associated factors among preterm neonates admitted to Binh Thuan General Hospital in 2025-2026.


Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 77 preterm neonates with gestational age < 37 weeks. Data were collected from electronic medical records. Neonatal anemia was identified using the binary hospital-record variable for anemia status. Associated factors included gestational age, birth weight, and maternal anemia.


Results: The prevalence of anemia was 14.3% (11/77); 95% CI: 8.2-23.8%. Mean gestational age was 34.3 ± 2.0 weeks and mean birth weight was 2143 ± 476 g. Neonates with anemia had lower gestational age and lower birth weight than those without anemia.


Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia among preterm neonates at Binh Thuan General Hospital was approximately 14.3%. Lower gestational age, lower birth weight, and maternal anemia were important associated factors.
