ASSESSING CARDIOVASCULAR RISK IN PATIENTS WITH PRIMARY OSTEOPOROSIS

Abstract

Objective: To survey cardiovascular risk using the SCORE_VN scale and some related factors in patients primary osteoporosis.


Methods: Cross-sectional study based on 87 patients with primary osteoporosis diagnosed using World Health Organization (WHO), who visited and treated Bach Mai Hospital, from November 2025 to December 2025.


Results: The risk of cardiovascular disease based on the SCORE-VN scale was 8.92 ± 7.15%. The proportion of patients in the low-moderate risk group was 32.2%, while 46% as high risk and 21.8% as very high risk. Regarding associated factors, the mean predicted cardiovascular risk was significantly higher in patients aged ≥70 years compared to those aged 50-69 years (19.05 ± 7.88% vs. 5.89 ± 2.90%, p<0.0001). Patients who smoked had a significantly higher cardiovascular risk than non-smokers (p=0.013). In addition, patients with a history of fracture had a 2.71-fold higher risk of cardiovascular disease compared to those without (OR = 2.71; 95% CI: 1.00 -7.34; p=0.046).


Conclusion: Patients with primary osteoporosis have a high predicted risk of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular risk as assessed by the SCORE_VN model is significantly associated with age, smoking status, hypertension, and a history of fractures. Therefore, cardiovascular risk assessment should be routinely performed in patients with primary osteoporosis to improve risk stratification and prevent cardiovascular events.
