EFFECTIVENESS OF SOME SOLUTIONS TO IMPROVE THE CAPACITY TO MEET TREATMENT NEEDS OF PEDIATRIC PATIENTS WITH CONGENITAL HEART DEFECTS AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 2

Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of several solutions aimed at improving the capacity to meet treatment needs for pediatric patients with congenital heart defects at Children’s Hospital 2.


Methods: A pre–post intervention study without a control group was conducted.


Results: After the intervention, the number of emergency cases increased more than fourfold and the number of inpatient cases increased more than twofold compared with the annual average before the intervention. The proportion of pediatric patients undergoing surgery increased from 48.5% to 73.3% (effectiveness index: 51.1%; p < 0.001). Waiting time for examination decreased (EI: 16.7%; p < 0.001), and the time required for preoperative documentation preparation decreased (EI: 5.8%; p = 0.038). The recovery rate increased from 3.14% to 10.50%, while the mortality rate decreased from 2.70% to 2.08%. The average length of hospital stay decreased from 17.7 to 16.9 days (p < 0.05).


Conclusion: The comprehensive implementation of these solutions contributed to improving the hospital’s capacity to meet treatment needs for pediatric patients with congenital heart defects at Children’s Hospital 2, as demonstrated by increased admission capacity, a higher surgical rate, improved treatment outcomes, and reduced length of hospital stay.
