Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of osteoporosis among women with knee osteoarthritis at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital in 2023.

Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study combined with retrospective medical record review was conducted on 96 women diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis according to the ACR 1991 criteria. Bone mineral density was assessed using quantitative ultrasound with the SONOST 3000 device at Vo Truong Toan University Hospital from January 2023 to June 2023.

Result: The mean age was 59.3 ± 8.7 years, with the 50–59 age group accounting for the highest proportion. Most patients were overweight or obese (84.4%), engaged in manual labor (95.8%), and resided in rural areas (68.8%). Bilateral knee osteoarthritis was predominant (79.2%), with radiographic stage II being the most common (69.8%). Common ultrasonographic findings included osteophytes, joint effusion, and joint space narrowing. The prevalence of osteoporosis among women with knee osteoarthritis was 70.8%, while osteopenia accounted for 29.2%.

Conclusion: Knee osteoarthritis is predominantly observed in older adults, particularly in the 50–59 age group, with a high prevalence among overweight or obese individuals, manual laborers, and those living in rural areas. The condition commonly affects both knees and is most frequently classified as radiographic stage II, accompanied by ultrasonographic findings such as osteophytes, joint effusion, and joint space narrowing. In women, osteoporosis is highly prevalent.
