EPIDEMIOLOGICAL AND CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MEIBOMIAN GLAND DYSFUNCTION AT THE VIETNAM NATIONAL EYE HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) at the Vietnam National Eye Hospital.


Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 50 patients (100 eyes) diagnosed with MGD from June to December 2024. Key parameters evaluated included age, sex, Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Tear Breakup Time (TBUT), Marx’s Line, and Meibography (performed with the Keratograph 5M).


Results: The mean age was 57.16 ± 14.84 years, with females accounting for 90% of the population. The most common symptoms were foreign body sensation (72%) and eyelid itching (62%). The mean OSDI score reached the severe range (48.1 ± 15.4), and TBUT was significantly reduced (4.92 ± 1.83s). Marx’s Line shift was observed in 96% of eyes, and gland dropout was present in 100% of eyes on Meibography. Patients over 60 years of age showed a higher prevalence of Grade 3 and 4 MGD, accounting for 74.1%.


Conclusion: MGD in Vietnam is characterized by a predominantly elderly female population with severe subjective symptoms. Age is the primary risk factor associated with increased disease severity.
