NUTRITIONAL STATUS AND ANEMIA AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN AGED 7–10 YEARS IN SOME BORDER COMMUNES OF TAY NINH PROVINCE

Abstract

Objective: To assess the nutritional status and anemia among primary school children aged 7–10 years in border communes of Tay Ninh province.


Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 1,154 primary school children aged 7–10 years from four schools in two border communes of Tan Hoa and Tan Dong, Tay Ninh province (August–October 2025). Nutritional status was assessed using WHO Z-score criteria; anemia was defined as Hb < 115 g/L.


Results: Mean weight was 22.0 ± 2.9 kg and mean height was 121.7 ± 5.4 cm. Z-scores for weight-for-age, height-for-age, and BMI-for-age were -1.61 ± 0.88; -1.50 ± 0.92; and -1.03 ± 0.96, respectively. Prevalence of underweight, stunting, wasting, and combined underweight + stunting were 29.7%, 23.5%, 10.1%, and 17.2%, respectively. Malnutrition increased significantly with age (p < 0.05), with no significant difference by sex or school. Mean Hb was 119.6 ± 12.5 g/L; anemia prevalence was 38.0%, with no significant difference by sex or age group.


Conclusion: Undernutrition and anemia remain prevalent among primary school children in the study area. Targeted nutritional interventions are needed in border communities.
