POINT-OF-CARE ULTRASOUND (POCUS) IN HEMODYNAMIC ASSESSMENT OF CRITICALLY ILL NEONATES

Abstract
Background: Hemodynamic instability is a common condition in critically ill neonates, particularly in preterm infants requiring intensive care. Traditional methods of hemodynamic assessment are primarily based on clinical evaluation and vital signs, which provide only indirect information and have limited sensitivity and specificity. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), especially cardiac POCUS, enables direct, real-time hemodynamic assessment, including preload, cardiac function, and afterload, thereby facilitating rapid diagnosis and guiding appropriate management.
This review aims to systematize the role of POCUS in the hemodynamic evaluation of critically ill neonates, presenting the main components of cardiac POCUS, key ultrasound findings, and its clinical applications in common scenarios encountered in the neonatal intensive care unit.
