CLINICAL, PARACLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND OUTPATIENT TREATMENT OUTCOMES OF PATIENTS WITH HYPOTHYROIDISM AT BAC NINH ENDOCRINOLOGY HOSPITAL

Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and evaluate outpatient treatment outcomes in patients with hypothyroidism at Bac Ninh Endocrinology Hospital.


Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study combined with treatment outcome evaluation was conducted on 198 patients with hypothyroidism who were managed and treated as outpatients at Bac Giang Endocrinology Hospital from 2024 to 2026.


Results: The mean age of the study participants was 54.8 ± 13.2 years, with the 40–60-year age group accounting for the highest proportion (46.5%). Females represented 92.9% of the study population. Subclinical hypothyroidism accounted for 59.1%, while overt hypothyroidism accounted for 40.9%. The most common symptoms before treatment were fatigue (100%), cold intolerance (99.5%), constipation (98.5%), weight gain (94.4%), and bradycardia (13.1%). Clinical symptoms improved markedly after treatment. Mean FT4 levels increased from 10.46 ± 2.93 pmol/L to 13.37 ± 3.40 pmol/L, whereas mean TSH levels decreased from 11.56 ± 20.58 mIU/L to 4.18 ± 8.62 mIU/L. The rate of good treatment response was 80.3%.


Conclusion: Hypothyroidism was predominantly observed in middle-aged and elderly women. Clinical manifestations were generally nonspecific but showed significant improvement following levothyroxine therapy. Outpatient treatment was highly effective, with a good response rate exceeding 80%.
