Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common causes of infections in both community and hospital settings. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance, particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), has become a major challenge in the treatment and control of infectious diseases.

Objective: To describe the distribution characteristics and antibiotic resistance patterns of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from clinical specimens at Hai Duong Children's Hospital in 2025.

Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on all S. aureus isolates obtained from clinical specimens collected from patients at Hai Duong Children's Hospital in 2025. Bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing were performed using the Kirby–Bauer disk diffusion method and the Vitek 2 automated system. Results were interpreted according to the CLSI M100 guidelines (2024).

Results: In 2025, a total of 439 S. aureus isolates were recovered, accounting for 13.98% of all bacterial isolates. The majority of patients were male (62.41%), and the highest proportion of isolates was found in children under 2 months of age (54.90%). S. aureus was most frequently isolated from patients in the Neonatal Department (42.14%) and the Emergency and Intensive Care Department (27.33%). All isolates remained susceptible to vancomycin and linezolid (100%), whereas high resistance rates were observed for benzylpenicillin (98.41%), cefoxitin (74.72%), and oxacillin (74.72%). The proportion of MRSA isolates was 74.72%.

Conclusion: Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen at Hai Duong Children's Hospital with the highest isolation rates observed among infants under 2 months of age and in the Neonatal Department. High rates of MRSA and resistance to several commonly used antibiotics were observed, while vancomycin and linezolid remained highly effective against the isolated strains.
