ASSOCIATION OF SERUM HBV DNA LEVELS WITH HBeAg STATUS AND SELECTED BIOCHEMICAL AND HEMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIS B-RELATED CIRRHOSIS AT HAI DUONG GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is one of the leading causes of liver cirrhosis and severe complications, including liver failure and hepatocellular carcinoma. Quantification of HBV-DNA, together with serological, biochemical, and hematological parameters, plays an important role in assessing disease activity and monitoring treatment.
Objective: To describe the laboratory findings of HBV-DNA levels, hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), selected biochemical and hematological parameters, and to determine the association between HBV-DNA levels and these parameters in patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis at Hai Duong General Hospital.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 52 patients with chronic hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis who were treated at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Hai Duong General Hospital, from July 2025 to March 2026. HBV-DNA levels were quantified using real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR). HBeAg, biochemical, and hematological parameters were determined using routine laboratory procedures.
Results: Males accounted for 75.0% of the study population, and patients aged over 60 years represented the largest age group. The proportion of patients with HBV-DNA levels ≥20,000 IU/mL was 42.3%, while 36.5% were HBeAg-positive. The mean serum AST and ALT levels were markedly elevated at 143.57 ± 137.18 U/L and 145.26 ± 179.10 U/L, respectively, whereas the mean platelet count was reduced to 82.19 ± 55.27 × 109/L. Patients with HBV-DNA levels ≥20,000 IU/mL were 13.93 times more likely to be HBeAg-positive than those with lower HBV-DNA levels and had significantly higher AST and ALT levels.
Conclusions: HBV-DNA levels were strongly associated with HBeAg positivity and elevated liver enzyme levels in patients with HBV-related liver cirrhosis. Combined monitoring of HBV-DNA with serological and biochemical markers may provide valuable information for disease assessment and clinical management.
