CLINICAL AND PARACLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BENIGN THYROID NODULES IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS UNDERGOING TRANSORAL ENDOSCOPIC THYROIDECTOMY VIA VESTIBULAR APPROACH (TOETVA) AT VIETNAM NATIONAL CANCER HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objects: To describe the clinical and paraclinical characteristics of benign thyroid nodules in pediatric patients undergoing transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy via vestibular approach (TOETVA) at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital.
Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 31 patients aged ≤18 years diagnosed with benign thyroid nodules and treated with TOETVA at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital.
Results: The mean age was 16.2 ± 1.7 years (range 12-18), with a predominance of females (93.5%). The most common clinical presentation was a palpable neck mass (96.8%), while dysphagia was reported in 32.3% of cases. Ultrasound findings showed an even distribution between thyroid lobes, predominantly solitary nodules (77.4%), and low-risk classification (TIRADS 2-3). Nodule composition was heterogeneous, with mixed lesions being the most common (45.1%). FNA results were mainly benign (Bethesda II, 87.1%), with a small proportion of Bethesda III (9.7%) and Bethesda IV (3.2%).
Conclusion: Benign thyroid nodules in pediatric patients are more common in females and typically present as a palpable neck mass with low-risk features on imaging and cytology. TOETVA is a feasible, safe, and cosmetically advantageous surgical approach, particularly suitable for pediatric and adolescent patients.
