Abstract

Objective: To describe the risk factors, clinical features of prolonged diarrhea in children under 5 years old at Hai Duong Pediatric Hospital in 2023-2024.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study using convenience sampling was conducted among 116 children under five years of age diagnosed with persistent diarrhea and hospitalized at Hai Duong Pediatric Hospital between June 2023 and December 2024.

Results: hildren with prolonged diarrhea were associated with risk factors such as not being breastfed (62.93%), malnutrition (59.48%), history of prolonged antibiotic use (69.83%), zinc deficiency (57.76%), previous bacterial or viral infections (79.31%). Many children with prolonged diarrhea experienced more than 6 episodes of diarrhea per day (51.72%), the majority had mucoid stool (96.55%), only 9.48% showed dehydration, with common accompanying symptoms including anorexia (48.28%) and tenesmus (19.83%).

Conclusion: It is necessary to identify and control risk factors to reduce the rate of prolonged diarrhea in children under 5 years old.
