Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical laboratory examination and treatment of iron deficiency anemia in children under 5 years old at Hai Duong Pediatric Hospital in 2024.

Subjects and methods: cross-sectional description, convenience sampling of 250 children who meet the selection criteria.

Results: The male to female ratio among over 250 children studied was 1.45:1, mainly in the age group from 6 months to under 24 months (65.6%). The main clinical manifestations were fatigue (78.8%), poor appetite (73.6%), pallor of skin and mucous membranes (81.2%), and rapid heartbeat (25.6%). 54.5% of children had mild anemia and 32.8% had moderate anemia. Most children had serum iron levels below 7 μmol/l (93.6%) and ferritin levels below 15 ng/ml, accounting for 76.4%. Oral iron supplementation is effective in children with iron deficiency anemia. Additionally, adjusting the diet to increase the intake of animal meat also helps improve the condition.

Conclusion: Early prevention and detection of iron deficiency anemia in children are necessary for timely treatment.
