Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of surgical treatment for right-sided colon cancer at the Oncology Center - Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital during the period 2021-2023.

Subjects and Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 43 patients with stage II-III right-sided colon adenocarcinoma who underwent radical surgery at the Oncology Center - Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023. The following variables were recorded: disease stage, postoperative length of hospital stay, and postoperative outcomes.

Results: The mean age was 65.63 ± 11.75 years. Most patients were in the age group from 60 to under 80 years, accounting for 67.4%. Moderately differentiated tumors accounted for 53.5%, well-differentiated for 27.9%, undifferentiated for 11.6%, and poorly differentiated for 7.0%. Stage distribution was as follows: stage IIA (9.3%), stage IIB (44.2%), stage IIC (2.3%), stage IIIA (34.9%), and stages IIIB-IIIC (4.7%). The mean postoperative hospital stay was 8.44 ± 1.3 days, with the shortest stay being 7 days and the longest 13 days. The group with an 8-day hospital stay accounted for the highest proportion (62.8%). Good postoperative outcomes (Clavien-Dindo grades I-II) accounted for 90.7%. The 36-month recurrence-free rate was 88.4%. The proportion of patients alive at the end of the study was 93%.

Conclusion: Surgical treatment of right-sided colon cancer at the Oncology Center - Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital is safe and shows initially favorable outcomes.
