PREVALENCE OF AZF MICRODELETIONS ON THE Y CHROMOSOME AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS IN MALE INFERTILITY PATIENTS ATTENDING HAI PHONG OBSTETRICS AND GYNECOLOGY HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Microdeletions of the Y chromosome (Yq) represent the most common structural abnormalities in the male-specific region. Different types and locations of deletions are associated with variable clinical manifestations. Therefore, accurate identification of the deleted regions and patterns is essential for prognosis and genetic counseling.
Objectives: (1) To determine the prevalence of AZFa, AZFb, and AZFc microdeletions on the Y chromosome in infertile men attending Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital. (2) To investigate factors associated with AZF microdeletions in this population.
Subjects and Methods: Primary infertile men who were indicated for AZF testing at the Molecular Biology Department, Hai Phong Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, from January 2024 to December 2025 were included in the study.
Results and Conclusions: The prevalence of Y chromosome AZF microdeletions was 19.48%. Deletions were predominantly observed in the AZFc region (84.21%), followed by AZFbc (15.79%), with no cases of AZFa deletion detected. Most cases were isolated deletions (13/15), and extended region deletions were predominant (11/15), with sY1291 being the most frequently affected marker. AZFbc deletions were associated with 100% azoospermia, whereas AZFc deletions were associated with a better prognosis, with 76.9% of cases having detectable sperm, mostly severe oligozoospermia. Serum FSH and LH levels were elevated in patients with AZF microdeletions, while testosterone levels tended to be lower. Notably, FSH and LH levels were higher in the AZFbc group compared to the AZFc group, whereas testosterone levels showed no significant difference between groups.
