Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of advanced platelet-rich fibrin (A-PRF) combined with xenogeneic bone substitute material (XBSM) in the treatment of periodontal intrabony defects after 6 months.

Materials and Methods: A randomized controlled split-mouth study was conducted on 23 patients with 46 intrabony defect sites. The sites were allocated into two groups: the test group received A-PRF combined with XBSM and a collagen membrane, while the control group received XBSM and a collagen membrane alone. Clinical periodontal parameters, including probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL), as well as radiographic outcomes, were assessed at baseline (T0) and after 6 months (T6).

Results: At 6 months, the A-PRF group demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in probing depth and improvement in clinical attachment level compared to the control group (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of alveolar crestal bone loss and defect fill on radiographic evaluation.

Conclusion: The combination of A-PRF and xenogeneic bone substitute material significantly improved clinical periodontal parameters in the treatment of intrabony defects associated with periodontitis. However, no additional benefit in bone regeneration was observed after 6 months.
