Abstract

In clinical practice, fine needle aspiration (FNA) is a useful method for the initial evaluation of parotid gland tumors due to its simplicity, minimal invasiveness, gives quick results, and safety for patients. Objective: To evaluate the value ultrasound-guided FNA in the differential diagnosis of benign parotid gland tumors. Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional retrospective study describing 252 cases of parotid gland tumors examined and treated at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital from January 2022 to June 2023 with the diagnosis of parotid gland tumors. Results: Parotid gland tumors predominantly present as a swelling (99.6%), are mostly painless (89.9%), with a minority having mild pain (11.1%), and rarely associated with facial paralysis (1.2%) or cervical lymphadenopathy (2.0%). In 261 FNA cases, pleomorphic adenoma showed a sensitivity of 98.3%, specificity of 93.0%, positive predictive value of 92.1%, negative predictive value of 98.5%, and an accuracy of 95.4%; for Warthin tumor, the corresponding values were 96.2%, 96.7%, 95.3%, 97.4%, and 96.6%, confirming the high accuracy of FNA in differentiating these two common benign parotid tumors.Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided FNA should be considered a routine procedure in the preoperative diagnosis of benign parotid gland tumors.
