EVALUATION OF POSTOPERATIVE WOUND CARE OUTCOMES AFTER PERMANENT PACEMAKER INPLANTATION IN PATIENTS RECEIVING ANTICOAGULANT THERAPY USING AQUACEL AND DUODERM DRESSINGS

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the outcomes of postoperative wound care for permanent pacemaker implantation in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy using Aquacel and DuoDERM dressings at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital.


Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among patients who underwent permanent pacemaker implantation and were receiving anticoagulant therapy. Postoperative wound care was performed using Aquacel and DuoDERM dressings at the Vietnam National Heart Institute, Bach Mai Hospital, from June to October 2021.


Results: By the seventh day after the procedure, pain intensity markedly improved, with 61.5% of patients reporting mild pain and 38.5% reporting no pain according to the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Wound exudate was predominantly moderate (84.6%), and all cases (100%) consisted of serous fluid, with no evidence of blood, pus, or abnormal odor. All patients (100%) achieved a wound healing rate of at least 90%, with pink, well-approximated wound edges and no abnormalities in local skin temperature, indicating favorable healing progress. Mild allergic reactions to the dressings were observed, including itching, erythema, papules, and vesicles; however, no cases of wound edema or infection were recorded. Despite these positive outcomes, 59.6% of patients continued to experience difficulty with movement during the follow-up period. Overall satisfaction with the wound care method was high, with only 5.8% of patients expressing dissatisfaction with Aquacel and DuoDERM dressings.


Conclusion: Postoperative wound care for permanent pacemaker implantation using Aquacel and DuoDERM dressings demonstrated favorable clinical outcomes, including significant pain reduction, effective exudate control, and promotion of wound healing by the seventh day after the procedure. Allergic reactions were generally mild and transient, and no infectious complications were observed. These findings support the safety and applicability of Aquacel and DuoDERM dressings in routine clinical nursing practice.
