EVALUATION OF TREATMENT EFFICACY OF TEMPOROMANDIBULAR DISORDERS USING DIGITALLY DESIGNED STABILIZATION SPLINTS

Abstract

Background: Temporomandibular disorders are common conditions characterized by pain, restricted mandibular movement, and joint sounds, significantly affecting quality of life. Stabilization splints are widely used; however, their efficacy remains inconsistent. The application of digital workflows in the fabrication of stabilization splints is emerging, yet standardized protocols and robust evidence for clinical effectiveness are still lacking.


Objectives: To evaluate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics and the treatment outcomes of occlusal splint therapy in the management of temporomandibular disorders at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during 2025–2026.


Materials and methods: A single-arm interventional clinical study conducted in patients with temporomandibular disorders at Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital during 2025 - 2026.


Results: The study was conducted on 35 patients with a mean age of 23.6 ± 5.56 years, including 14 males and 21 females. After 1 and 3 months of treatment, joint pain, joint sounds, and limitations in mandibular range of motion were markedly reduced; these improvements were statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05, Friedman test).


Conclusions: Temporomandibular disorders predominantly affect young females, with joint sounds being the most common presenting symptom. After 1 and 3 months of treatment, joint pain and joint sounds significantly decreased, demonstrating statistically significant clinical improvement.
