REMNANT CHOLESTEROL CHARACTERISTICS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC ALCOHOLISM AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe the characteristics of remnant cholesterol (RC) and analyze associated factors in patients with chronic alcoholism. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with analytical component was conducted on 78 patients with chronic alcoholism treated at Military Hospital 103 from November 2023 to December 2025. Results: The mean RC value was 0.79 ± 0.27 mmol/L; the prevalence of elevated RC was 43.6%. Compared to the non-elevated RC group, the elevated RC group had significantly higher BMI, longer duration of alcohol dependence, greater daily alcohol intake, higher triglycerides, lower HDL-C, higher AST and GGT, and higher prevalence of fatty liver (p < 0.05). RC correlated positively with triglycerides, AST, GGT, BMI, duration of alcohol dependence, and daily alcohol intake, and negatively with HDL-C. In the multivariate logistic regression model, BMI, duration of alcohol dependence, daily pure alcohol intake, and GGT were independent factors associated with elevated RC. Conclusion: Elevated RC is relatively common in patients with chronic alcoholism and is associated with dyslipidemia, liver injury, and hepatic steatosis. RC is a simple, readily available marker that may support the assessment of metabolic and hepatic abnormalities in this patient population.
