CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND RESPIRATORY POLYGRAPHY OF PATIENTS WITH OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA AT CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL 1

Abstract

Background: Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep-related breathing disorder associated with neurocognitive and cardiometabolic consequences. Local data on clinical features and respiratory polygraphy are still limited in children Viet Nam.

Objective: To describe clinical characteristics and respiratory polygraphy findings of children diagnosed with OSA at Children’s Hospital 1.

Methods: A case series study was conducted on children who underwent overnight from 07/2023–07/2025. OSA severity was classified using commonly applied pediatric apnea–hypopnea index (AHI) cutoffs (mild 1–<5, moderate 5–<10, severe ≥10 events/hour). Clinical symptoms, anthropometrics, and respiratory polygraphy indices (AHI, ODI:Oxygen Desaturation Index , SpO2 nadir ,..) were analyzed.

Results: The mean age was 6.7 years, 73.1% were male. The most frequent symptoms were snoring (89.7%), witnessed apnea (96.2 %) and daytime sleepiness (46.2%). Tonsillar hypertrophy was observed in 71.8%, adenoidal hypertrophy was  was identified 66.7 % , and overweight/obesity in 60.3%. On respiratory polygraphy , mean AHI was 19 events/hour; SpO2 nadir was 79.1 %; ODI was 19.2 events/hour. OSA severity distribution was mild 35.9%, moderate 15.4%, and severe 48.7%.

Conclusion: Pediatric OSA in our study commonly presented with snoring and witnessed apnea. Respiratory polygraphy showed a substantial proportion of moderate-to-severe disease, highlighting the need for early screening and timely management.
