CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS AND HISTOPATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS OF CONJUNCTIVAL SQUAMOUS PAPILLOMA AT THE VIETNAM NATIONAL EYE HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To describe the clinical and histopathological characteristics of conjunctival squamous papilloma and to evaluate factors associated with undergoing two or more surgical procedures at the Vietnam National Eye Hospital.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 198 patients with histopathologically confirmed conjunctival squamous papilloma.
Results: The mean age was 29.3 ± 16.5 years, with male predominance (73.7%); the 19–40 age group accounted for 55.6%. Lesions were predominantly unilateral (95.5%), while bilateral involvement was rare (4.5%). Single lesions were observed in 60.6% of cases, whereas 39.4% had two or more lesions. Epithelial dysplasia was identified in 5.1% of cases, all of which were mild to moderate. A total of 87.9% of patients underwent a single surgery, while 12.1% underwent two or more procedures. Patients with multiple lesions had a higher rate of repeated surgeries (20.5% vs. 6.7%). No significant association was found between age, sex, and undergoing two or more surgical procedures.
Conclusions: Conjunctival squamous papilloma predominantly affects young individuals and males, and most lesions are benign. However, patients with multiple lesions and epithelial dysplasia require close follow-up due to recurrence and repeated surgical interventions.
