SURGICAL SITE INFECTIONS AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS AT 354 MILITARY HOSPITAL IN 2023

Abstract
Objective: To assess the current status of surgical site infections (SSIs) and analyze associated factors at 354 Military Hospital in 2023.
Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 270 surgical patients at 354 Military Hospital from August to December 2023. Data were collected from medical records. SSI diagnosis was based on the guidelines of the Vietnamese Ministry of Health. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0, employing descriptive statistics and association analyses.
Results: The overall SSI rate was 2.59% (7/270 cases), including 2.22% superficial SSIs and 0.37% deep SSIs; no organ/space SSI was recorded. SSI rates for clean, clean-contaminated, contaminated, and dirty surgeries were 2.0%, 1.3%, 4.4%, and 13.3%, respectively. Patients with an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score ≥ III had a significantly higher risk of SSI compared with those with ASA < III (OR = 7.11; 95% CI: 1.30–38.90; p = 0.014). No significant associations were found between SSI and age, sex, body mass index (BMI), comorbidities, type of surgery, or duration of surgery (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: The SSI rate at 354 Military Hospital in 2023 was low (2.59%). An ASA score ≥ III was identified as a factor associated with an increased risk of SSI. Enhanced surveillance, preoperative risk assessment, and comprehensive implementation of preventive measures are recommended to further reduce SSI incidence.
