PATIENT-REPORTED LINGUAL NERVE SENSORY DISTURBANCE AFTER MANDIBULAR BILATERAL SAGITTAL SPLIT OSTEOTOMY

Abstract
Objective: To describe the frequency, manifestations, recovery time, and functional impact of patient-reported lingual nerve sensory disturbance after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO), and to explore selected associated factors.
Subjects and methods: This retrospective descriptive study included 46 patients with skeletal Class III deformity who underwent isolated mandibular setback BSSO. A questionnaire assessed sensory changes in the lingual nerve distribution, symptom duration, and effects on daily functions.
Results: Nine of 46 patients (19.6%) reported lingual nerve sensory disturbance. Numbness was the most frequent symptom (88.9%). Eight of nine patients (88.9%) recovered within 6 months, and eight reported an effect on at least one daily function; taste was most frequently affected (87.5%). No statistically significant differences were found according to age, sex, concomitant mandibular third-molar removal, or unfavorable split (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: Patient-reported lingual nerve sensory disturbance occurred in approximately one fifth of patients after BSSO and usually resolved within 6 months. When present, it may affect taste and other daily functions.
