Abstract

Background: Effective inventory management supports operational continuity and clinical safety. ABC–XYZ–VEN stratifies supplies by consumption value, demand variability, and clinical criticality.


Objective: To evaluate a risk-stratified ABC–XYZ–VEN inventory model combined with a Just-in-Time (JIT) strategy for improving supply chain performance and reducing medical supply shortages at Children’s Hospital 1.


Methods: This mixed-methods study included retrospective analysis of 2019–2024 logistics data, ABC–XYZ–VEN classification, discrete event simulation, and a JIT pilot in Interventional Cardiology during Q1/2025. Data covered more than 1200 items; 17 semi-structured interviews identified bottlenecks.


Results: Stock-out rates remained above 10%, and emergency procurement peaked at 34.7%. DES predicted a 45.8% stock-out reduction with JIT. The pilot exceeded projections, reducing stock-out events by 72.7%, eliminating shortage-related procedure delays, increasing service level from 88.0% to 92.5%, and reducing inventory days from 58 to 33.


Conclusion: ABC–XYZ–VEN combined with selective JIT can strengthen supply chain resilience in high-acuity pediatric care, reduce shortages, limit emergency procurement, and support continuity of clinical services.
