ULTRASOUND AND MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING FINDINGS COMPARED WITH ENDOSCOPIC RETROGRADE CHOLANGIOPANCREATOGRAPHY IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF COMMON BILE DUCT STONES AT HAI PHONG INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL, 2023 - 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: This study aimed to: (1) describe the imaging characteristics of common bile duct (CBD) stones on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (CHT) in patients undergoing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for stone extraction at Hai Phong International General Hospital from 2023 to 2025; and (2) compare the diagnostic value of ultrasound and CHT with ERCP in detecting CBD stones in this population. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 84 patients diagnosed with CBD stones, who were examined and treated at Hai Phong International General Hospital between October 2023 and October 2025. Results and Conclusions: In the diagnosis of CBD stones, ultrasound demonstrated a sensitivity of 87.34% and a specificity of 40%, and detected biliary dilatation in 85.71% of cases, suggesting obstruction. CHT showed a sensitivity of 97.46%, specificity of 80%, and an overall diagnostic accuracy of 96.43%. Therefore, CHT is recommended in cases where ultrasound findings are negative but clinical and biochemical findings still suggest CBD stones. The Kappa coefficient (k = 0.1404) indicates a certain level of agreement between ultrasound and CHT.
