MESIODISTAL INCISOR DIMENSIONS, ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN PERMANENT INCISOR CROWDING AND OCCLUSION IN 8-10-YEAR-OLD CHILDREN IN HANOI

Abstract
Objective: To determine permanent incisor mesiodistal dimensions, their associations with maxillary and mandibular incisor crowding and occlusion in 8-10-year-old children in Hanoi.
Subject and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 224 children aged 8-10 years. Permanent incisor mesiodistal dimensions and occlusal characteristics were assessed using three-dimensional digital models. Associations between incisor crowding, Angle malocclusion and the terminal relationship of the second primary molars were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests.
Results: The prevalence of incisor crowding was 52,68%. Boys exhibited significantly larger mesiodistal dimensions in several permanent incisors than girls (p<0,05). Incisor crowding was significantly associated with Angle malocclusion (p<0,001) with Angle Class II increasing the likelihood of crowding by 9,8-10,2-fold. Incisor crowding was also significantly associated with a mesial step terminal relationship in the maxilla and a distal step terminal relationship in both arches (p<0,01).
Conclusions: Incisor crowding is common in 8-10-year-old children, and mesiodistal dimensions of some permanent incisors exhibit sex differences. Incisor crowding is significantly associated with Angle malocclusion and the terminal relationship of the second primary molars, particularly Angle Class II and specific terminal plane relationships. These findings may facilitate early identification of children at risk for crowding and support interceptive orthodontic treatment during the mixed dentition stage.
