Abstract

Background: The uric acid/HDL-cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been considered an index reflecting both metabolic disturbances and inflammatory status; however, the association between UHR and kidney function in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients has not been fully investigated.


Objective: To investigate the association between UHR and kidney function in T2DM patients.


Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 55 patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and 55 patients without CKD, selected using a 1:1 matching method by age and sex. Spearman correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between UHR and clinical as well as laboratory variables. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was applied to identify factors associated with CKD in T2DM patients.


Results: Patients with CKD had significantly higher UHR levels than those without CKD (p = 0.0003). UHR showed a negative correlation with eGFR (r = −0.34; p = 0.0003). In the multivariable logistic regression model, UHR was significantly associated with CKD after adjustment for other factors (OR = 1.18; 95% CI: 1.06–1.30; p = 0.002). The area under the ROC curve of the predictive model was 0.7613.


Conclusion: The uric acid/HDL-cholesterol ratio (UHR) is associated with kidney function in T2DM patients and may be a simple and useful biomarker for assessing the risk of CKD.
