PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF ASSESSING THE MEAN VALUE OF IMMATURE GRANULOCYTES (IG) IN PATIENTS WITH SEPSIS AT BECAMEX INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Background: Sepsis is a severe infectious condition associated with high mortality. Immature granulocytes (IG) have been considered an early, readily available, and low-cost biomarker.
Objectives: To evaluate the value of immature granulocyte indices and their association with selected inflammatory markers in hospitalized patients with sepsis at Becamex International Hospital.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 19 patients aged ≥18 years who were diagnosed with sepsis according to Sepsis-3 criteria and treated as inpatients from July 2025 to December 2025.
Results: The median age of patients was 65 (52–80) years, with 63.2% aged ≥60 years. The blood culture positivity rate was 57.9%, with Gram-negative bacteria predominating, mainly Escherichia coli. The median IG# was 0.23 (0.13–1.04), and the median IG% was 1.7 (0.94–2.84), showing a right-skewed distribution. IG# showed a very strong positive correlation with procalcitonin (PCT) (r = 0.812; p = 0.05), while no significant correlation was observed with white blood cell count (WBC) or C-reactive protein (CRP). IG% showed a tendency toward correlation with PCT but did not reach statistical significance.
Conclusion: Immature granulocytes, particularly IG#, may serve as a useful adjunct for early diagnosis and assessment of sepsis severity; however, further studies with larger sample sizes are warranted.
