OUTCOMES OF RETROGRADE INTRARENAL SURGERY USING FLEXIBLE URETEROSCOPY FOR KIDNEY STONES AT BINH DAN HOSPITAL: 453 CASE

Abstract

Objective: Retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) using a flexible ureteroscope is an effective treatment for kidney stones smaller than 2 cm or stones located in difficult-to-access areas such as the lower renal calyx. This technique has several advantages, including minimal damage to the renal parenchyma and a reduced risk of bleeding. This study aimed to summarize and evaluate the outcomes of RIRS performed at Binh Dan Hospital.


Materials and Methods: All patients diagnosed with kidney stones who underwent RIRS using a flexible ureteroscope at Binh Dan Hospital from January 2023 to November 2025 were included. This was a retrospective descriptive case series study.


Results: A total of 453 patients with kidney stones underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery using a flexible ureteroscope. Male patients accounted for 53.4%, with a mean age of 50.3 years. The mean stone size was 15.4 mm, and lower calyceal stones accounted for 31.3% of cases. Preoperative double-J stent placement was performed in 63.4% of patients. The mean operative time was 69.3 minutes, and the average hospital stay was 3 days. The stone-free rate at 1 month was 49.4%. The overall complication rate was 14.1%, including hematuria (0.7%, Clavien–Dindo grade I), followed by fever (5.5%), urinary tract infection (5.5%), and sepsis (2.4%).


Conclusions: Retrograde intrarenal surgery using a flexible ureteroscope is a safe procedure with a low complication rate, and patients recover well after surgery.
