Abstract

Background: Urethral calculi is a rare disease in urolithiasis. The etiology is commonly related to urethral obstruction, such as urethral stricture, urethral diverticulum, or secondary stones originating from the upper urinary tract that become impacted at physiological narrowing sites of the urethra. Currently, there are many methods of urethral calculi treatments that are applied by clinicians but there is still no report on the treatment results of this disease. In this article, we evaluate the current results of treating urethral calculi.

Subjects and methods: Retrospective case series study of urethral calculi treatments from 01/2019 to 12/2023.

Result: A total of 128 cases underwent urethral calculi treatment, including 100% men, with a mean age of 49,9 ± 12,8. The most common reason for hospitalization was dysuria, the mean urethral calculi diameter is 12,4 ± 5,1 mm, stone located at the posterior urethra. Management was endoscopic lithotripsy, and the mean operating time was 34,7 ± 17,6 mins. Common accidents during operating were urethral mucosal injury, complication postoparative was urethral stricture. The mean of postoperative hospital stay was 1,5 ± 1 days.

Conclusion: Urethral calculi managements depend on the location and diameter of the stone. There are many treatment methods: Medical expulsive trea ment, endoscopic lithotripsy, manipulation, open surgery or cystostomy and lithotripsy. Endoscopic lithotripsy is an effective treatment method, applicable to all urethral calculi locations.
