Abstract

Background: Ureteral calculi are a common urological disorder. Laser ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) is a minimally invasive and highly effective treatment modality widely used in current practice. However, postoperative urinary tract infection (UTI) remains a potential complication following endourological intervention. UTIs exhibit a broad clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic bacteriuria to complicated infections; therefore, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended.

Objective: To evaluate the early outcomes of ureteroscopic laser lithotripsy for ureteral stones in patients receiving perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis.

Materials and methods: A prospective descriptive study with analytical components was conducted on 33 patients with ureteral calculi who underwent ureteroscopic lithotripsy and received preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis at Can Tho Central General Hospital and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital from August 2025 to February 2026.

Results: A total of 33 patients were included, with 57.6% being male and a mean age of 50.8 ± 9.9 years. The most common presenting symptom was dull flank pain (72.7%). Stones were predominantly located in the upper third of the ureter (57.6%). The median stone size was 10.0 mm (IQR: 8.5–11.5). Median operative time was 30 minutes (IQR: 30–40), and median postoperative hospital stay was 1 day (1–1). All patients underwent JJ stent placement. No early postoperative complications were observed (modified Clavien–Dindo grade 0: 100%). The stone-free rate was 97%. Postoperatively, 100% of patients had no symptomatic UTI, and 60.6% demonstrated negative leukocyturia at follow-up.

Conclusion: Laser ureteroscopic lithotripsy with perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis is a safe and effective treatment for ureteral calculi, associated with a low rate of early postoperative complications and a reduced incidence of symptomatic urinary tract infections.
