APPLICATION OF THE NEWS2 SCORE FOR THE PREDICTION AND PROGNOSIS OF SEPSIS IN THE CARDIAC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT OF DA NANG HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objectives: To investigate the clinical and paraclinical characteristics, and to evaluate the predictive and prognostic performance of the NEWS2 score for sepsis.
Object: 208 patients admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Da Nang Hospital (from August 2024 to September 2025).
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study.
Results: The mean age was 73,5 ± 14,5 years, with males accounting for 52,4%, The prevalence of sepsis was 65,9% (137 patients), of which 67,9% progressed to septic shock, The NEWS2 score demonstrated excellent predictive performance for sepsis with an AUC of 0,909 (95% CI: 0,87 - 0,947; p < 0,001), and good prognostic capability for mortality with an AUC of 0,822 (95% CI: 0,765 – 0,879; p < 0,001).
Conclusions: The NEWS2 score possesses excellent predictive power for sepsis (AUC = 0,909; 95% CI: 0,87–0,947; p < 0,001), with an optimal cutoff of 9,5 (sensitivity: 86,1%, specificity: 78,9%). It also reliably predicts mortality, demonstrating a good AUC of 0,822 (95% CI: 0,765–0,879; p < 0,001) at an optimal cutoff of 10,5 (sensitivity: 85,1%, specificity: 69,3%).
