Abstract

Objective: To investigate factors associated with anemia in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus.

Patients and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 100 patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) receiving treatment at Nghe An Friendship General Hospital.

Results: The prevalence of anemia was 66.0%, of which 69.7% of cases were classified as mild anemia. Hemoglobin concentration was significantly inversely correlated with disease activity, as assessed using the Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) (r = −0.403, p < 0.001). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, low complement C3 levels (OR = 4.60; 95% CI: 1.75 – 12.13) and 24-hour urinary protein excretion ≥ 0.5 g/day (OR = 7.24; 95% CI: 1.46–35.92) were independently associated with a higher likelihood of anemia (p < 0.05). In univariable analysis, disease activity defined as SLEDAI ≥ 6 and a positive direct antiglobulin test were also significantly associated with anemia (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: Disease activity was significantly associated with anemia in patients with SLE. Low complement C3 levels and 24-hour urinary protein excretion ≥ 0.5 g/day were independently associated with a higher likelihood of anemia.
