Abstract

Objective: To describe the clinical characteristics of patients with primary myogenous pain associated with temporomandibular disorders.

Subjects and methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 46 patients aged 18–45 years who were diagnosed according to the 2020 International Classification of Orofacial Pain.

Results: Females accounted for 86.96% of the study population. Pain most commonly involved the masseter muscle (89.13%) and was predominantly chronic (73.91%) and unilateral (65.22%). Limited mouth opening was observed in 60.87% of patients. The mean VAS pain score was 5.63 ± 1.76, and the mean maximum mouth opening was 37.26 ± 7.62 mm. Isolated myogenous pain accounted for 86.96% of cases. No statistically significant differences in VAS scores or maximum mouth opening were observed between the two diagnostic groups (p > 0.05).

Conclusion: Primary myogenous pain associated with temporomandibular disorders predominantly affected women and was commonly characterized by chronic masseter pain accompanied by limited mouth opening.
