EVALUATION OF GROWTH IN PRETERM INFANTS AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 57 infants born before 34 weeks of gestation at Thai Nguyen National Hospital from January 2025 to December 2025.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 57 infants born before 34 weeks of gestation at Thai Nguyen National Hospital from January 2025 to December 2025.
Results: The proportion of infants with weight below gestational age at the time of achieving enteral feeding of 130 ml/kg/day increased with the degree of prematurity, highest in extremely preterm infants (26.7%). The need for respiratory support decreased significantly over time, with more than half of the infants no longer requiring support at this feeding milestone. Feeding intolerance symptoms were more common in extremely low birth weight infants but decreased after 3 weeks of age. Very and extremely preterm infants showed statistically significant increases in weight, length, and head circumference from birth to discharge.
Conclusion: Preterm infants, especially very and extremely preterm groups, remain at risk of extrauterine growth restriction. Although respiratory status, feeding tolerance, and growth indicators improved over time, optimizing nutrition and comprehensive care remains essential.
