NURSES’ KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE REGARDING NOISE AND LIGHT CONTROL IN NEWBORN CARE AT THAI NGUYEN NATIONAL HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objectives: To describe nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding noise and light control in newborn care at the Neonatal Emergency Department, Thai Nguyen National Hospital, in 2026.
Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study comprising two independent components: a knowledge survey using a 15-item self-administered questionnaire (K1-K15) among 39 nurses, and a practice assessment using a 10-item observation checklist (P1-P10) across 69 observation records. Because identifiers between the two datasets could not be reliably matched, the study did not link individual records and described the two objectives separately.
Results: The mean knowledge score was 13.67±2.03/15 (Cronbach’s alpha 0.79); 94.9% of nurses were classified as having good knowledge. The clearest knowledge gap concerned the recommended average noise threshold, with only 53.8% answering correctly. For practice, among 51/69 records with all 10 criteria completed (Cronbach’s alpha 0.92), the mean score was 17.08±4.59/20; 70.6% were classified as good. Alarm-management behaviors achieved high completion rates (83.8-98.5%), while light-control behaviors and gentle handling achieved lower rates (53.7-57.4%).
Conclusion: Nurses had generally good knowledge but a notable gap regarding the quantitative noise threshold; alarm management practice was strong, but light control and some environmental handling behaviors were inconsistent. Regular training with concrete quantitative content and a standardized practice monitoring checklist are needed.
