CURRENT STATUS OF NURSES’ KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARD CANCER PAIN MANAGEMENT AT THE INSTITUTE OF NUCLEAR MEDICINE AND ONCOLOGY, BACH MAI HOSPITAL
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To describe nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding cancer pain management at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Bach Mai Hospital, in 2025–2026, and to evaluate changes in the composite Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (KASRP) score before and after an educational intervention.
Methods: A one-group pre–post quasi-experimental study without a concurrent control group was conducted among 78 of 90 eligible nurses (86.7%) who provided direct care to patients with cancer at the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology, Bach Mai Hospital. Data were collected using the 39-item KASRP and its Vietnamese version, which had previously undergone translation, cultural adaptation, and validation (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88). The study comprised two phases: a baseline assessment (T0, June 2025) and an educational intervention developed based on the baseline findings. The intervention consisted of four face-to-face training modules, each comprising four teaching periods, delivered over one month. The post-intervention assessment (T1) was conducted one month after completion of the training, with a nine-month interval between T0 and T1.
Results: Before training, the mean composite KASRP knowledge and attitude score was 19.10 ± 3.69 points (range: 10–29). Major knowledge gaps were identified in pain assessment in clinical scenarios and opioid pharmacology. After training, the mean score increased to 32.60 ± 7.17 points (range: 16–39). The mean increase from T0 to T1 was 13.50 points (95% CI: 11.66–15.34), which was statistically significant (t = 14.580; df = 77; p < 0.001), with a large effect size (Cohen’s dz = 1.65).
Conclusion: The composite KASRP knowledge and attitude score regarding pain management increased significantly after the educational program. These findings suggest that the program may contribute to improving nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding cancer pain management.
