Abstract

Osteoporosis is a metabolic disorder of bone that leads to damage to bone strength, including integrity of mass and quality, increasing the risk of fractures. Osteoporosis is a common bone disease and a major public health problem. Currently, it is estimated that more than 200 million people worldwide suffer from osteoporosis, with 1/3 of women and 1/5 of men over 50 years old experiencing fractures due to osteoporosis. In Vietnam, the estimated prevalence of osteoporosis is 27% in women and 13% in men. Osteoporosis affects the quality of life of patients. Accurately assessing the quality of life of each osteoporosis patient helps doctors develop more appropriate counseling, treatment, and prevention strategies. There are many tools to assess this issue, among which the Qualeffo-41 scale has reliability measured by the internal consistency coefficient (Cronbach’s α) that is quite high.

Objective: To describe the quality of life of osteoporosis patients examined and treated at Tam Anh General Hospital in 2024 based on the Qualeffo-41 scale. Subjects and research methods. This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 197 patients diagnosed with osteoporosis at the Rheumatology Department, Tam Anh General Hospital, from January 1, 2024 to March 31, 2024.

Results: The average age was 67.6 ± 11.3, with the youngest being 32 years old and the oldest 101 years old; female (88.3%); married (83.2%); the majority had a secondary school education or lower (55.8%); the subjects had been diagnosed with osteoporosis for 5 to 10 years (54.8%), with no complications (57.4%); 79.7% of osteoporosis patients showed a decrease in quality of life. Of these, 65.0% experienced decreased mental function, 72.1% decreased social function, and 75.1% decreased overall health function. The age group over 70 years old had a higher rate of reduced quality of life (87.8%) than the group under 70 years old (74.8%), with a statistically significant difference (p = 0.0308, <0.05).

Conclusion: The quality of life in osteoporosis patients must be studied and investigated, with the aim of providing appropriate counseling, support, and interventions to help patients accept and cope with the disease.
