KNOWLEDGE AND ATTITUDES TOWARDS BLOOD TRANSFUSION SAFETY AMONG NURSE IN CLINICAL DEPARTMENTS OF TAM ANH GENERAL HOSPITAL AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS, 2025
Main Article Content
Abstract
Background: Blood transfusion safety is a top priority in clinical practice. Nurses are directly involved in almost every step of the transfusion process, so their knowledge and attitudes are key determinants in preventing transfusion-related adverse events.
Objectives: To describe the current status of nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards blood transfusion safety and to analyse associated factors among nurses working in clinical departments at Tam Anh General Hospital, in 2025.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 445 nurses working in 19 clinical departments at Tam Anh General Hospital, from January 2025 to December 2025. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire under the supervision of the research team. Associations between knowledge, attitudes and nurses’ individual and occupational characteristics were analysed using logistic regression models, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.
Results: The proportion of nurses answering the theoretical questions on blood transfusion safety correctly was 95.28%, and the proportion of nurses selecting responses reflecting a positive attitude was 89.46%. Nurses working in the Surgery–Obstetrics group were likely to achieve an adequate level of knowledge of blood transfusion safety than those in the Internal Medicine -Paediatrics group (OR= 1.83; 95% CI= 1.24 - 2.70). Nurses with more than 5 years of work experience had more positive attitudes towards blood transfusion safety than those with 5 years or less (OR= 1.79; 95% CI= 1.16 - 2.75).
Conclusions: Nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards blood transfusion safety were at a high level, with 95.28% correct responses to the theoretical questions and 89.46% positive attitude responses. Working department and length of work experience were the two factors significantly associated with nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards blood transfusion safety
